Job Description

Technician / Fabricator - Mock-ups & Clay Modelling | Product Design & User Experience (PDX) Team

The ePlane Company (Ubifly Technologies Pvt. Ltd.) is an eVTOL startup incubated at IIT Madras, building the e200X - a compact electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft for urban air mobility and aerial emergency medical services. Our PDX team shapes everything the pilot, paramedic, and passenger see and touch: cabin and cockpit architecture, interiors, materials, ergonomics, and mock-up-driven design validation, developed against certification frameworks such as EASA SC-VTOL and DGCA AEAC 01.

Role Overview
We are hiring a hands-on Technician/Fabricator to join the PDX team, building physical mock-ups that drive our design decisions. From full-scale cabin and cockpit bucks used in UX assessment workshops to clay models, seating rigs, and appearance mock-ups for exhibitions, you will turn drawings and CAD into tangible, testable hardware. An ideal first role for a diploma graduate who loves making things with their hands and wants to grow inside an aircraft program.
Key Responsibilities
• Fabricate design mock-ups, ergonomic bucks, and study models for the e200X cabin, cockpit, and exterior using wood, MDF, foam, plastics, sheet metal, and composites.
• Support clay modelling activities: armature preparation, clay application, rough shaping, and surface finishing under designer guidance.
Assist in setting up and running UX assessment workshops, assembling seating rigs, adjusting mock-up configurations, and modifying hardware based on live feedback.
• Operate workshop tools and machines (cutting, drilling, sanding, joining) safely; maintain the workshop, tools, and material stock in good order.
Finish mock-ups to presentation quality: filling, sanding, priming, painting, wrapping, and trim application.
• Read and work from engineering drawings, templates, and simple CAD outputs; provide practical feedback on buildability.
• Support packing, crating, and handling of mock-ups for internal moves, demos, and exhibitions.
• Follow all facility safety protocols, including safe handling of adhesives, paints, and solvents, and proper ventilation and PPE practices.

Requirements

Requirements

• Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Tool & Die, Automobile Engineering, Carpentry/Model Making, or a related trade (recent graduate).
• Demonstrated hands-on fabrication ability - academic projects, workshop training, or personal builds in wood, metal, foam, or plastics.
• Ability to read basic engineering drawings and measure accurately with standard workshop instruments.
• A careful, safety-first working style and willingness to keep a clean, organised workshop.
• Eagerness to learn clay modelling, composite work, and finishing techniques on the job.
• Team spirit and reliability - mock-up builds are collaborative and often deadline-driven.
Good to Have
• Exposure to automotive clay modelling, model making, or prototyping studios (internship or coursework).
• Basic familiarity with 3D printing, laser cutting, or CNC operations.
• Interest in aircraft, automobiles, or product design.

Benefits

• Training and mentorship in clay modelling, mock-up building, and finishing from experienced designers.
• The chance to build the physical models that define a real aircraft - and see them used in pilot and paramedic evaluations.
• A clear growth path from fabricator to senior modeller/prototyping specialist within the PDX team.
